Afghan Hounds
Afghan Hounds are one of the tallest dog breeds. Male Afghan Hounds stand between 26 and 28 inches at the withers; females stand about 24-26 inches at the withers. Originally, this breed was used for hunting large game and guarding the cattle. In Afghanistan, these dogs are known as the Tazi and Baluchi Hounds. The history of the breed goes back for many centuries. Similar-looking dogs were mentioned in Egyptian papyruses and pictured in the caves of Afghanistan around 5000 years ago.
Europeans discovered these unusual dogs in the 19th century when British officers came back from the Indian-Afghanistan border and brought exotic-looking dogs to England. Nowadays, Afghanistan forbids the exportation of Afghan Hounds. American and European breeders should be very careful to avoid inbreeding and preserve the original looks and working abilities of the breed.
Even in ancient times, breeders selected Afghan Hounds for their distinct look rather than for their working qualities. The breed was kept pure for centuries, because it was neither exported nor crossbred with other breeds. Today, these unique dogs are rarely used for their original purposes; they are mainly family companions and show dogs. Although, if given an opportunity, Afghan Hounds are able to stalk deer, goats, wolves and leopards. These agile dogs pursue game by sight. They outdistance the horses during the hunt and are able to act without directions from the hunter.
Afghan Hounds gained popularity because of their spectacular qualities as show dogs. Being aloof and dignified, these creatures enjoy participating in competitions and shows. Their main talents are tracking, herding, watchdogging, lure coursing and racing. They are also good at conformation.
Afghan Hounds make good pets for those who can provide a great deal of grooming for their beautiful long coat. Like all sight hounds, these dogs are sensitive to chemicals, vaccines and anesthetics and have a very low pain tolerance, which makes them suffer from minor injuries. They may need an experienced and knowledgeable veterinarian.
The distinct appearance of the Afghan Hound easily separates it from other dogs. This breed is characterized by a very refined long and thin face, long ears covered with long flowing hair and large almond-shaped eyes. Everything in these dogs seems to be aristocratic, elegant and slender. Their body is long and flexible; the tail is very thin with a curl at the tip; their legs are long and straight. The coat of Afghan Hounds is long, silky and slightly wavy. Any coat color and pattern is acceptable in Afghan Hounds.
