Afghan Hounds - Breed Organizations
Afghan Hounds appeared in Europe at the end of the 19th century. Breeders and fanciers of the Afghan Hound did not have a sole standard to stick to and judge the dogs by. There was an urge for the official standard and an official organization that could take care of the breed's welfare. The first breed club along with the official standard appeared in Great Britain in 1926.
The same year the Afghan Hound was introduced to the United States. The AKC recognized the breed in 1926. The National breed club, the Afghan Hound Club of America, was formed in 1937. The number of breed adherents grew steadily, as did the popularity of the breed. In 1940, the Afghan Hound Club of America held the first breed show.
Afghan Hounds gained their popularity in many countries including Canada, Belgium, Finland, Germany, Russia, Sweden, Netherlands, and others. Most countries have established breed clubs in the second half of the 20th century. They continue to promote the Afghan Hound and compete to be titled as a leading country in the breeding of the dog. As a rule, breed clubs have a number of associated breeders who make up the reputation of the club by producing first class Afghan Hounds and winning at the prestigious shows.
