The breeders of Afghan Hounds should explore the breed's specifics and produce dogs that conform to the standard as close as possible. It is also very important to know the history of the breed and the main developmental stages it has undergone. People who take interest in Afghan Hounds are well aware of the basic tendencies that occurred in breeding. Thus, the modern type of the Afghan Hound is far from its original version. The dogs that appeared in Great Britain at the end of the 19th century and made the foundation stock of the present day population had different features from the dogs we know today. It concerns both appearance and working qualities.
Thus, the Afghan Hound bred in Afghanistan was used to perform various functions. In other words, it was a utility dog. The Afghan Hound of today is used mainly as a companion dog. It is true that many Afghans take part in canine sports, yet most of them are owned basically as pets. The shift in the breed's functions was due to breeders' striving to produce beautiful dogs with a strikingly luxurious coat and exotic eastern appearance. Very often appearance was a priority. Many Afghans were bred to the detriment of their working qualities. In all fairness, the Afghan Hound of today is an amazing dog. It has retained many of its working qualities such as brilliant hearing, agility, and intelligence, yet is far from the original version.
Afghan Hounds - Health
Needless to say, breeders who are involved in Afghan Hounds should have health issues as the priority when breeding their dogs. The breed is considered generally robust. However, some inherited diseases do occur in the breed. Thus, the Afghan Hound can suffer from hip dysplasia, eye problems, thyroid and other disorders. The Afghan Hound is sensitive to anesthesia. If well cared for, the dog lives for about 12 years.
As a rule, Afghan Hounds have a litter from 6 to 8 puppies. Some dogs deliver more than 8 babies. However, not all of them survive. Puppies are very small at birth. They can be hard to housebreak and tend to be very mischievous. Their misbehavior results from curiosity the breed is famous for. Puppies have a different coat than adults. Though they do not need much grooming until the age of one year old, it is wise to make them familiar with this procedure very early. Since
Afghan Hounds need considerable coat care when adults, they should learn to be tolerant from an early age.
